Ron’s Palette

February

I coached little league baseball in Santa Fe for years when all my kids were of age. They all grew up as kids do, flew the nest and somehow I find myself looking in the mirror at sixty years old. I have always believed in the use it or lose it philosophy and now I find myself blessed with eight grandkids. I guess that’s why coaching my grandkids on the Artisan Diamondbacks is a no brainer this year (coach pitch).

Little league has been a time marker in my life  because my dad was my little league coach for a couple years when I was around nine. He was a very busy civil engineer with his own business, worked all the time and this was one of the special things we shared together…and is still is one of the best memories in my life.

Formerly a lawyer, Paul Grace served for many years as president of Santa Fe Little League, building it up by organizing and funding the team before his sudden passing in 2017.  Paul was a force and the glue of the team and could be often found picking weeds from the playing fields, cleaning restrooms and manning concession stands when the need arose…he did it all. When Paul left there was a huge hole in the organization and talk of closing down the league. My son in law, Jared Tafoya stepped as the new interim president and saved the league from collapsing. Currently local policeman Aaron Ortiz, his wife Victoria and a bunch of real dedicated and cool people are taking Santa Fe little league to new levels. Getting kids off screens, off the couch, running around bases, swinging bats, learning to be a team, getting out in the sun, sharing an after game snack…how cool is that…we really can’t afford to lose this. If nothing else the kids are all getting vitamin D.

Artisan has been a sponsor of the team for over 18 years. It really is probably one of the best $500 we’ve invested to have all these cute little kids with smiles on their faces running around bases…with shirts proudly saying Artisan Diamondbacks imprinted on them. For $500 you can sponsor a team…they need bats, balls and uniforms. Or donate $50 to sponsor a kid to play.  Or if want to be part of the action then volunteer as a coach or umpire…that would be awesome! If you can encourage just one kid to sign up that would be great…please help if you can….Santa Fe Little League baseball is a really good thing…Santa Fe needs it…or just come to a game…really…when is the last time you had a good frito pie or hot dog for a good cause? Time to step up to the plate!

Namaste,

Ron

What’s going on in Artist-Land.

It is with a heavy heart that we relay the passing of long-time Artisan customer & friend Elias Rivera.

Excerpt from Santa Fe New Mexican…
Artist Elias Rivera, whose color-driven figurative pieces captured the spirit of people engaging  in everyday activities, died this December at his home in Santa Fe. He was 82. His wife, artist Susan Contreras, said the painter died of ailments related to Parkinson’s disease.

Rivera, who was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents in April 1937, focused in his early days on the dark realities of the urban world around him — the shop girls and showgirls struggling to make a living, the people riding the subways, men lounging around in shadowed bars and cafes, riots in the streets.  Later, after moving to Santa Fe in 1982, bright colors enveloped his work as he pictorially told the story of artists in Santa Fe, a day at the market in Guatemala and religious festivities in Mexico.

“It was all about composition, all about showing the nuances of being human,” his wife said of Rivera’s oil-on-canvas works.  He called his paintings “his children,” she said.
