Ron’s Palette

September

On August 30th of this year…I hit a milestone…I celebrated my sixtieth birthday. Wow…hard to believe because I still feel 25 (most days). The greatest thing about turning sixty is realizing how lucky I have been up to this point in life. I started my career with Artisan as a salesclerk in my twenties on Canyon Road. In those days I was pulling paper and showing paint to artists like R.C. Gorman, Agnes Martin, Tom Lovell, Tommy Maccioni and playing tennis on the weekends with artist Clark Hulings. I feel blessed to have known them. I have always been a lucky guy and Artisan was another piece of luck. I had sold a restaurant in Scottsdale that myself and a partner were working 80 hours a week, sleeping on cots in the back after washing the dishes on some nights and barely squeaking by…but luckily our landlord needed to level our building so had to buy our lease out…got out of that one. I moved to Santa Fe and saw an ad for a salesclerk at Artisan…put on a tie, and applied thinking I really don’t like retail but I will stay a couple months. Thirty one years later somehow Artisan has become a dream job for me. The original owners, Bill Banta and Jack Young basically passed the business on to myself and three partners (all salesclerks). We have all been partners in the business without killing each other for over three decades. Most of my day now is doing exactly what I enjoy. I have my pet python, Delphino keeping me company in the store and we have a lot of fun with people, yoga class at Artisan every Wednesday morning with master teacher Stephen Jen, a radio program called Art Fusion every Thursday blending visual artists with musicians in the store and shooting fun videos with artists in their studios to fill up the rest of the week. I am blessed to have such a long term competent talented staff that fills in all the other necessary retail cracks. I am filled with gratitude for the way this path has ended up and can only hope that these sixties can be as much fun as the rest has been. I guess a little luck in some right places can go a long way.

Namaste,

Ron

Artist Statement

My work celebrates the delicate nature of paper in museum quality metal sculpture.  I began my career as a papermaker, printmaker and graphic designer. The passion I have for paper, the ideas, philosophy and history it has captured for centuries, continued to inspire me when I transitioned into sculpture. How to capture those qualities in sculptural form presented a challenge. While most of my peers were sculpting in clay and casting it into dark, heavy metal objects, I was inspired to do something different. By experimenting directly with paper and wax and working in a lost wax foundry for several years, I developed a process specifically for paper that captures all of its intimate details. The technique took me two years of tireless experimentation in Austin, Texas to develop and seven years of further development with a foundry in Thailand to perfect.

September Workshops 2019

September So Soon?

It may seem like things are starting off slow, but our next class with Lee Rommel, beginning on Tuesday, September 3rd, sold out within one day! For those of you who have not gotten to sign up for a seat in this popular six week session, our October sessions will open for registration soon – keep an eye on the Artisan Events Calendar!

Beginning September 13th, from 10AM to 1PM, to further meet students inquiry for more multi-week workshops, we are very excited to host Four Fridays Studio Painting with Anita Louise West. This is a four-week workshop that will meet Friday mornings into the month of October. This is open to all media, artists of any level and is bring your own materials and whatever you are working on. Each session will feature a short lesson and the rest of the time you will have individual help at the easel. Register soon because the class will fill up and is only open to 12 students.

On September 14th, we are hosting another paid demonstration with Coulter “Colt” Prehm who will be sharing an Alla Prima Portrait Painting Demo, from like and working in traditional oils. For those who may wonder about these events, they are small gatherings – usually no more than 16 people,in what is ultimately a private demonstration between our working artist and students. By removing the hands-on component we hope to foster a greater dialogue between artists of any level while providing a kind of backstage pass to discover the artists process and methodology. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and learn about new materials and potentially a new process.

And, Saturday, September 28th, we are excited to host Sheila Miles for her workshop, Oil Painting Strategies, Tools and Techniques. Learn how to achieve clarity in your work, strengthen your composition and use color to construct your image. There will be a short lecture to open up the workshop and then students will enjoy painting with one-on-one feedback from the instructor. All materials are included for your use in the price, but of course as always, you are welcome to bring your favorites along with you.

Don’t miss out on our offerings for this month, and check the calendar regularly as new classes are rolling out each week!

To register for these and see forthcoming workshops, visit us at www.calendar.artisansantafe.com for more information.

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS & INSTRUCTORS

Artisan Santa Fe’s workshop program ArtSpot is seeking new instructors and workshop proposals! We strive to keep our dedicated student body interested and engaged with new techniques and materials.

Maybe you teach about a specific technique or use some specific materials to make something new and exciting and you are not afraid to share your techniques with others? You like to assist students in their painting process? You can teach both beginners to advanced together?

We are looking for proposals for ticketed lecture demos, 3 hour (half day) or 6 hour (full day) workshops, or even multi-week studio sessions. We welcome most any subject matter; however, we primarily serve fine artists or those working in experimental practices with traditional materials that we carry in the store.

Our space can generally hold between 12 and 16 students. We provide tables, easels, water containers and offer options to furnish materials for our classes for an additional fee.

Please send your name, website or digital portfolio, class ideas and/or short workshop descriptions to Anastasio at artspot@artisansantafe.com.

Stuff Around The Store

Cool Item

Of The Month

Artisan carries a lot of unique and/or one of a kind items. Here is one you might find interesting.

the ZigZag book by Hahnemühle

300 gsm – fine grained surface – 18 pages fanfold

18 pages of the finest watercolour paper folded in accordion style provide unlimited possibilities. No matter if it is the giraffe with the longest neck, the widest panorama or an Instagram-style pictorial, the ZigZag book you can do it all. Ideal for urban sketchers and all those that love to paint and draw while being on the road: the ZigZag book is available in a square (14 x 14 cm) or portrait formats A5 and A6.

The watercolour paper features a fine-grain surface on both sides and is perfectly suited for all wet painting techniques with brush or pen. The 300gsm weight ensures stability and thanks to the surface sizing, colours flow with ease and can be lifted without any problems. The paper is eraser-resistant and masking fluid and tapes are removed residue-free.

Rugged oversized book covers help to protect the content. Due to its durable cover, the ZigZag book is inured to outside influences. An eye catching red band in the upper right corner can be used to close the book securely. The rooster on the backside underlines the exclusivity of the Hahnemühle creative prowess.

Available at both at Albuquerque and Santa Fe stores!
