Ron’s Palette

October

Artisan has published a new Bill Worrell Journal. This journal is the fifth one we have published representing Worrell over a span of 15 years. This Journal is titled…. ”On the Mend…for America“  This journal is not a statement of necessarily where we are as a country right now…but sets the intention of where we need to be to start healing…all great journeys begin with an intention. Bill Worrell is a force of nature. His writings, poems, songs, books, jewelry, pottery, paintings and monumental bronzes have touched the hearts of so many…it is his hope this journal can reach into an individual heart and release some deep creativity, hope, and answers to how to start unifying our nation again. The heart has long been a symbol of love. Love in itself is always perfect. We all love this great country but have become so divided by race, religion and politics that we have lost our strength. We need to reach into ourselves, each one of us, and start being the solution…not the problem. These journals are available at Artisan’s two stores in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, our website artisansantafe.com and the Worrell Gallery in downtown Santa Fe. The intention is set…the solution must come from all of us.

Namaste,

Ron

PS.  The price of the journal is $9.99 …our intention is this is not to make “money”…but to start “peace “
PPS.  The spiral on the side of the journal is designed to hold your pen because as Worrell said “ What good is a journal if you don’t have something to write with !

Message from Bill Worrell

I have been a customer of Artisan for about thirty years, and even beyond, when I only dreamed of a successful artists’ career. Back in the days when Artisan was on Canyon Road I would often stop in to simply soak in the ambience and magic of the place, and to hopefully “rub shoulders” with artists of fame, renown, and recognition.  Georgia O’Keeffe was an Artisan customer, but I was a bit late on the scene to see her there.

I met present co-owner Ron Whitmore when founders Bill Banta and Jack Young were still living and were owners/operators.  Ron, his wife Karen – who is a splendid painter – and I became fast friends.  We would often get together for happy hours at my house, where Ron came up with the idea of publishing a “Worrell Sketchbook/Journal.”  On the Mend is the fifth one Artisan has published.  Journals are donated to cancer patients, a disease I have fought for the past nineteen years.

On the Mend is a hopeful forecast that the citizens of America will unite and work together as one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.  We have so much to gain by placing the welfare of the nation above political party interests!

Peace to all of you,

 Bill Worrell

We support some of the best artists in the world!

Artist of the Month

Thom Ross

Born in San Francisco in 1952, Thom has had a lifelong interest in American History and the “folk hero” who is a product of that history and has long been the motivating force behind his work. His emphasis, however, is focused on the historical “folk hero” as compared to the mythical “folk hero.” (An example of the historical folk hero would be Jesse James, a mythical folk hero would be Paul Bunyan; one actually existed while the other is a product of tall tales.)

Ross works in various media including painting, book illustration and life-sized recreations of historical scenes. Favorite subjects include: CowboysIndians and historical battles in the American Indian Wars. Ross has illustrated at least 20 books, including a history of baseball. In 2001, Ross published a book, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Words and Pictures. In 2002, Ross illustrated the 100th anniversary edition of Owen Wister‘s novel, The Virginian.

Ross’ first plywood installation was a 1976 cutout of Clint Eastwood, which he and a friend placed as a prank above a railroad trestle to recreate a scene from Dirty Harry in the location where the scene had been filmed five years earlier. In 1983, Ross created “154 Nevermore” – an installation of 154 plywood ravens on a highway in Jackson, Wyoming (recreated in steel in 2000). In 1984, Ross created “The Catch”- a diorama for the Baseball Hall of Fame illustrating a legendary catch with the same nickname by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series. He created a new version of the work in 2004, and displayed it in various locations in New York City. In 1998, Ross created “The Defining Moment” for SAFECO Field, a tableau of 11 steel cutouts of a Ken Griffey, Junior play in the 1995 baseball playoffs. Ross’ 2005 work, “Custer’s Last Stand”, was a recreation of life-sized warriors riding life-sized horses in the Battle of Little Bighorn at the original site at Medicine Tail Coulee in Montana. That exhibit toured Cody, WyomingJackson, Wyoming, and Sun Valley, Idaho. In September 2008, Ross recreated a 1902 photograph of Buffalo Bill Cody and his “Wild West Show” and his traveling troupe of Native Americans, in front of the Cliff House at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

Saturday, October 5th,we have Lee Rommel hosting her Travel and Daily Studio Watercolor class from 10AM to 4PM. I feel like we are so incredibly lucky to have access to Lee Rommel and her vast array of painting knowledge so it is always a pleasure when we can host these one-day classes with her as well. For anyone who’s ever wanted to downsize and get right to painting as a daily practice, this class is for you! Whether you’re painting en plein aire, or working from reference photos from your recent adventures you will learn a new technique and get the opportunity to look through some of the journal’s that Lee has completed during some of her travels! Sign up today and bring your own materials!

Friday, October 11th, Catherine Trapani will debut a class that focuses on teaching you all that you need to know for Beginning Cold Wax. This versatile medium is one that can benefit artists working in most any media! For those entirely new to the concept, cold wax is a painting medium that allows you to work with a variety of tools for its application. It can be used in limitless ways to layer, add color and texture to your work. This class will include all materials and is only open to 8 students!

Saturday, October 12th, we are excited to offer another installment of painting with Karen Whitmore – this time you will Learn to Paint a Horse. During the three-hour session, students are provided a reference image to work from and after a short demo and lecture, students receive individual help as they work at the easel. Karen’s classes are incredibly popular with students as she offers a very supportive and encouraging environment. Other students really enjoy the wealth of knowledge that she brings to the table. This class always sells out and it is truly wonderful to see such attention and care going into the work. You really don’t want to miss this class!

Friday, October 18th, Natasha Isenhour returns for another round of Soft Pastel: Building a Powerful Image. There aren’t enough awesome things to say about Natasha – she is a true professional, and incredibly talented artist! A brief scroll through her social media and in between collecting awards for her beautiful paintings, she is constantly working on creating more and more works! Sign up and be inspired by this wonderful artist, teacher and person! For our last class here in Santa Fe, we couldn’t get any of the students to stop working and take a lunch break!

Saturday, October 19th, Amy Flowers is stopping by the store and will teach two different workshops on the same day! In the morning, from 10AM to 1PM we will host Printmaking for Rookies and it just exactly as it sounds – an introduction class teaching you all you need to know about using gelli-plates. This is for anyone who’s ever wanted to learn about the new alternative to traditional printmaking! Explore layered monotype printing, work with fabulous textures, stencils, stamps, masking– we’ll even play with a transfer method using packing tape! This class is going to be great for anyone looking to incorporate some fresh new techniques into their practice. Then, beginning at 2PM Amy will host Collage-A-Phobia. This workshop is geared for those looking to explore the versatile world of collage making in which anything goes. You can use acrylic paints & mediums, inks, stamps, ephemera & more to create your special work, and of course you are encouraged to bring your own special things to add into the mix. Materials for both workshops will be included in each price, and if you sign up to take both of them, you can get a $10 in-store credit as thanks!

Sunday, October 20th, we are hosting another version of our Paint Pouring Mini-Class with Mia Fesmire of MacPherson! This class is a 101 and offers you the opportunity to go through this process step-by-step. There is no wrong way to do paint-pouring and this process practically begs for innovation and experimentation! All materials are provided for you to make one piece – and of course your $10 registration fee becomes a store-credit for you to use the very same day!

By the time you read this, the following information may no longer be relevant, but it’s worth saying: Lee Rommel’s October sessions are already SOLD OUT for the afternoon. And, at the time of this writing, we have one seat open for her Six Tuesday Morning Sessions beginning October 22nd and carrying us through the end of November. At this time we do not have the dates for her next sessions available, but please keep an eye on our online calendar because we will list them as soon as possible!

To register for these and see forthcoming workshops, visit us at www.calendar.artisansantafe.com for more information.

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS & INSTRUCTORS

Artisan Santa Fe’s workshop program ArtSpot is seeking new instructors and workshop proposals! We strive to keep our dedicated student body interested and engaged with new techniques and materials.

Maybe you teach about a specific technique or use some specific materials to make something new and exciting and you are not afraid to share your techniques with others? You like to assist students in their painting process? You can teach both beginners to advanced together?

We are looking for proposals for ticketed lecture demos, 3 hour (half day) or 6 hour (full day) workshops, or even multi-week studio sessions. We welcome most any subject matter; however, we primarily serve fine artists or those working in experimental practices with traditional materials that we carry in the store.

Our space can generally hold between 12 and 16 students. We provide tables, easels, water containers and offer options to furnish materials for our classes for an additional fee.

Please send your name, website or digital portfolio, class ideas and/or short workshop descriptions to Anastasio at artspot@artisansantafe.com.

Jessica Guttman

Jessica Guttman is a survivor. Jessica was involved in a very serious car accident years back that took the life of her fellow passenger and left her with traumatic brain damage. She has used her art as her therapy to keep her going but still suffers on a daily basis.  One of the results of her injury is that she is refreshingly blunt and honest in her assessment of situations. Artisan has offered her the opportunity to continue her therapy by having a column on art and life…please send any questions that you want her honest opinion to HERE.

Hi, my name is Jessica I graduated cum laude from CSF with a painting degree in 1997. I’m trying to live independently in my tiny home my friends made. I’m witty but lack skills for basic survival. My best friend and I were passengers in a car accident, she died and I was in years of coma rehab. Comas are very hard on the brain since the accident on April 5,1991. I like to listen to Garrison Keillor. My favorite college professors were Linda Swanson and Judy Chicago. I used to write before brain damage but colleges don’t like it if you can’t understand sentence structure and paragraphs so I fell in love with painting and giving everyone advice. Thank you for giving me a space for my writing and please list my GoFundMe!

Thank you sincerely,   Jessica
