Ron’s Palette

November

They say as you get older, time moves quicker… I can’t believe we are less than a year for our next Artisan Expo at Buffalo Thunder Resort. The Expo is scheduled for September 25th through September 27th with some workshops starting on September 24th.  This Artisan Expo has grown to be the largest artist material and instructional event in the world. We began this back at Santa Fe Convention Center in 2000 and soon outgrew that facility and moved out to Buffalo Thunder where we have 16 classrooms that hold art classes and demonstrations morning, afternoons and evenings. We have a very exciting lineup of new instructors and classes mixed in with previous favorites and expect another record Expo. We are hoping that by February 2020 we will have all the new classes and vendor lineup on the designated website…  Expoartisan.com

We have a video highlighting the event on the site now if you missed the last Expo and want to see what all the excitement is about. Mark your calendars to come out to the Buffalo Thunder Resort on September 25th, 2020 for 86 Manufacturers of art material booths selling discounted supplies and over 100 workshops… it will be here before we know it.

Namaste,

Ron

Artist of the Month

Roxana Villa

Fragrance can be complex and provide an intimate connection to nature, especially when made by hand with locally sourced and organic, high quality plant materials. Roxana Illuminated Perfume provides a unique alternative to synthetic fragrance that assists people in feeling nurtured and beautiful. It’s the scent experience you’ve been craving!

I’m Roxana Villa and I make perfumes that draw upon the ancient wisdom in nature creating a heightened sense of timeless elegance. Complex botanical fragrances are life enhancing and have the ability to deeply connect us to our own essential nature. I’m on a mission to spread awareness of the many gifts we acquire from the plant world and teach others to do the same.

Welcome, I am Roxana, hand crafting pure botanical perfumes by melding alchemy with modern artistic wisdom. Every single fragrance is handmade by me using authentic vital materials sourced with extreme mindfulness. My perfumers palette is composed of whole, organic, botanical aromatic treasures from leaves, barks, seeds, rinds, roots and flowers.
From first starting this perfumery I have been committed to consciousness in all aspects of the business and supporting nature. These botanical fragrances have never been tested on animals, contained any historical animal ingredients or advocated the use of these materials. Some of the fragrances are vegan, in the purest since of the word, since there are no petro chemicals used in the fragrance. As you know, the petroleum industry is responsible for some of the worst environmental pollution and destruction to wildlife on the planet. These are  ♻ eco-luxe perfumes!

November Workshops 2019

With temperatures dropping and our beloved daytime light getting shorter, it is more important than ever to nurture and devote time to your practice! All of our workshops are open to beginners through advanced artists, unless otherwise noted – we hope you’ll sign up and spend some time working with us in our space.

To start us off this Saturday, November 2nd, Kathryn Stedham will be in house for a one-day workshop Color-Mixing: Non-Toxic Oil Painting. You will touch on subjects like alla prima, non-toxic studio methods, and learn about the different ways you can mix specific colors to embolden your artworks and make striking compositions. Students love Kathryn’s workshops because she is knowledgeable, gives great feedback and does stellar demos that she uses to move the class along throughout the day. You can work in traditional oils, water-mixable oils, or save a little money and bring your own materials.

We are so excited to host another multi-week studio workshop Three Fridays Studio Painting with Anita Louise West that begins on Friday, November 8th and runs on the 15th and 22nd as well. Ms. West has been teaching with us for a couple of months and students are so excited to have another working opportunity. Every class begins with a short demo in a different medium, and then you have individual time together at the easel as you’re working. You can work in any medium, and you bring your own materials.

Then, Saturday, November 9th, Richard Guzman returns for his special workshop Alla Prima: Painting in the Periphery. This class is all paint and no talk according to Richard but fear not, for you will learn everything you need to sit down at the easel and get to painting! Please remember to bring your painting clothes and be prepared to transport a wet painting home with you! This class is open to students with some oil painting experience. You will provide your own materials, reference and Artisan has easels. For a recommended materials list, check out the listing in our calendar.

And we close out the month a little early with a very special workshop on Saturday, November 16th that so many of you have requested: Beginning Resin – in this special one-day workshop you will work with Alison Thomas and ArtResin products to create a unique and interesting composition. Learn about an overview of resin itself as well as safety and handling methods. This will be followed by a demo on how to mix the resin with fluid acrylics for an acrylic pour on canvas. Abstract artists or artists looking for more acrylic-focused workshops – this is for you! Using this fascinating medium can help you add depth and detail to your work and so much more. Register now!

****SPECIAL EVENT OPPORTUNITY****
For those of you who keep trying to get into Lee Rommel’s workshops:

We have put together two special packages for two lucky people! The first is Four Tuesday Afternoons with Lee Rommel beginning Tuesday, November 5th, and running the 12th, 19th and 26th. The cost for these four sessions is $168 + tax and you bring your own materials.

Then, we have another small package of Two Tuesday Afternoons with Lee Rommel, beginning Tuesday, November 19th, and then ending on the 26th. This class costs $84 + tax, and you would bring your own materials.

There are only two options available and once they’re gone you will have to wait until next year when we start offering more Tuesday Sessions again!

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS & INSTRUCTORS

Artisan Santa Fe’s workshop program ArtSpot is seeking new instructors and workshop proposals! We strive to keep our dedicated student body interested and engaged with new techniques and materials.

Maybe you teach about a specific technique or use some specific materials to make something new and exciting and you are not afraid to share your techniques with others? You like to assist students in their painting process? You can teach both beginners to advanced together?

We are looking for proposals for ticketed lecture demos, 3 hour (half day) or 6 hour (full day) workshops, or even multi-week studio sessions. We welcome most any subject matter; however, we primarily serve fine artists or those working in experimental practices with traditional materials that we carry in the store.

Our space can generally hold between 12 and 16 students. We provide tables, easels, water containers and offer options to furnish materials for our classes for an additional fee.

Please send your name, website or digital portfolio, class ideas and/or short workshop descriptions to Anastasio at artspot@artisansantafe.com.

JESSICA GUTTMAN – UPDATE

Jessica Answers the Question:

Did your perception of art change after your accident and what artists and art do you like to look at ?
– Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
Thanks for your question! My perception of the entire world changed after brain damage, all noises became louder and lights became brighter which made me cry a lot. My memory became nonexistent and certain parts of my body became numb while other parts became more aware. I’ve always sought out artists like myself, artists who’ve had to work harder someone coined the term outsider artists this term is silly if anyone has had to fight to be in a class or had a solo show it is us the insiders the one’s with keen perception that can only be acquired through working harder than the average artist and are slighted because we aren’t the norm. My two favorite artists right now are the painter Alice Neel and the fiber artist Judith Scott two powerful artists that your lucky if your art history classes mention them. I had two teachers in art school that went above and beyond their job title, one was my advisor Linda Swanson who pushed me, changed the art school rules for me and someone who’s art I still look at today. The other teacher was Judy Chicago, an artist who brought history to objects like the dinner party which is still being shown internationally she made me feel superior BECAUSE of the shortcomings she allowed me to plaster muslin and paint directly on the wall at the end of the art intensive month class. We got to show our pieces to the public and someone I never met wanted my piece which was plastered to the wall 🤣so my friends helped me un-plaster the giant piece.  Thanks for your questions!   Sincerely,  Jessica

Jessica Guttman is a survivor. Jessica was involved in a very serious car accident years back that took the life of her fellow passenger and left her with traumatic brain damage. She has used her art as her therapy to keep her going but still suffers on a daily basis.  One of the results of her injury is that she is refreshingly blunt and honest in her assessment of situations. Artisan has offered her the opportunity to continue her therapy by having a column on art and life…please send any questions that you want her honest opinion to HERE.
