March

“What do you think…want to give it a try in Santa Fe?”  That was the question one of the original owners of Artisan, Jack Young, asked me after Peter Hopper from HK Holbein had told him he thought Santa Fe would be a great location to hold an art material and instructional expo. That was way back in 1997 and Peter Hopper had just come from the Tools of the Trade show in Pasadena, CA. where he had multiple booths representing Holbein artist materials. That started the ball rolling on a whole lot of work and fun and we had our first Artisan Expo at the old Sweeney Convention Center in 2000. We had about 50 workshops and 40 vendor booths back then. The show has now grown to be the largest art instructional and material event in the world. The event is now held at the larger Buffalo Thunder Resort with workshops happening in 16 rooms starting on September 24th 2020 and the Vendor Floor opening on September 25th. This Artisan Expo hosts approximately 100 short art workshops and 86 booths of art material manufacturers, as well as a free demonstration stage on the vendor floor.

This Artisan Expo features many new instructors, new workshops and new vendors showcasing and selling their art materials. Admission to the vendor floor is free and you’ll find fantastic prices on a huge selection of art materials. Workshop registration is now open and many of the workshops will fill up quickly. Please mark your calendars and visit us at expoartisan.com for complete workshop information and registration. Come be part of the creative energy that makes this event so special!

Greetings Artists!

Four Friday’s with Anita Louise West resumes starting Friday, March 13th. This class is the class to take your practice to the next level. This multi-week workshop is excellent for beginners wishing to get established in their practice and learn some new techniques as well as explore different mediums along the way. Advance your work on three major levels: content, design and technique. All levels are welcome; you may work in any media.

Three Workshops with Amy Flowers
First on Saturday, March 21st, from 10AM to 1PMDriven to Abstraction. Explore the world of abstract painting with acrylic paint. You’ll create different effects using white & black gesso, iridescent & interference colors, acrylic mediums & develop your abstract vision with visual exercises.

Then in the afternoon on Saturday, March 21st, from 2PM to 5PM, she teaches All Mixed Up: Exploring the World of Acrylic Mediums. You guessed it, this is THE workshop to learn about all the various ways you can manipulate acrylic paints. Learn about gels, extenders, surfaces and the cross pollination of process and technique. You’ll experiment on canvas reference boards, then play with it all on canvas, and cradle board. Create paintings with texture, collage with depth and dimension. We’ll be working with Golden products, so this is your chance to play with all that stuff you’ve seen on the shelves!

Lastly on Sunday, March 22nd, from 1PM-4PM a second round to conquer your fears: Return of Collage-A-Phobia! Explore the mysteries of collage with this class, focusing on de-collage—the art of uncovering!  Build up layers of paint, ephemera & transparent imagery on a canvas board; learn techniques to peel, cut & sand away, revealing the collage buried within.

Note From Amy Flowers: “All materials are provided and included in the workshop price–bring a work apron and dress for mess!”

What’s going on in Artist-Land.

It is with a heavy heart that I heard the news that Cathy Aten has passed. She was a longtime Artisan customer from way back on the Canyon Road days. After she was diagnosed with MS, she could be seen, dressed to the nines, cruising around downtown in her wheelchair with her big smile and dog Emma on her lap. She was an artist, writer, humanitarian who blogged about her illness and what it taught her about who she really was. You should read some of her blogs to understand and feel her strength in dealing with MS. Thank you Cathy for all the beauty and wisdom you shared with the world while you were here….you will be missed by all that came in contact with you.

Sincerely,

Ron Whitmore
