Inspired to Step Up My Game!

I had the opportunity to visit artist Jim Rabby at his home/gallery/studio/collectors rooms/framing/shipping facility earlier this month. This facility he built is unbelievable. The video — later in this newsletter — will give a small idea about what makes up Jim Rabby. The thing I left with was how a creative spirit can manifest.

I was told years ago by my friend and artist Bill Worrell to look for the fruit someone is producing with their life. Jim Rabby had polio as a small child, and overcoming that, produced a work ethic that is inspiring. He gets up at 1 AM, seven days a week, to creatively produce art…and has done that for over fifty years. His inspiration is directly from the Source…whatever you believe that to be…and he just steps out of the way. We only took video on a small part of his operation, out of respect for what he does. He is blessed to have his assistant, Laura, by his side for over 20 years, helping in the ordering of materials, framing, building crates, shipping and being a right hand to him. I left his place feeling a bit lazy in comparison…but also inspired to step my game up !

Namaste,
Ron

Artist of the Month

Jim Rabby

About Jim

I’ve been painting professionally, continually, for a living for over 50 years, and I’ve been living in Santa Fe for 32 years, living in my dream 1912 adobe studio and gallery, in an old downtown neighborhood of Santa Fe. I got my start at the Shrine Crippled Children’s Hospital, where I had a series of polio operations as little boy, brought art supplies for the children and I made some work with those supplies. In 1956, my parents opened a storefront, a mom and pop shop, that sold art supplies and made picture frames so I was around a bunch of artist collecting their supplies. Through the sixties I was exhibiting in dozens of alternate spaces at a time: dinner theaters, beauty boutiques, bank lobbies, restaurants, outdoor art shows. It was experiential, getting a lot of feedback, building a collector base from grass roots. I’m self taught, I’ve tenaciously worked at it.

Artist Statement

Painting for me is life itself. To me, success is living to my potential. My life is an extraordinary personal triumph and these paintings are a celebration of it. I am an ordinary guy with extraordinary potential – and my goal in life is to reach my potential. Being that the bar is set real high, I’m always moving to center and performing my best – it’s all fierce. The commitment is to give it everything it calls for and refine and deepen that commitment. It calls for great discipline to gain great freedom.

Don’t miss out on our dynamic roster!

To kick off the month, we welcome Karen Whitmore with her afternoon workshop on Saturday March 2nd, “Painting Dynamic Animal Portraits in Oil! This class is great for anyone of ANY level. We provide materials. The following week on Saturday, March 9th, “Creative Voice” with Catherine Trapani, which focuses on developing an inner voice and applying those findings to real physical processes in creating artwork. Most materials are provided in this one-day class – and you will take home a beautiful artwork.

Every Wednesday is usually reserved for MUSE Figure Drawing, which is FREE figure drawing in our space from 11am to 1pm. In addition to that, on Wednesday, March 13th, we will be hosting a mini class in the afternoon from 2 to 3:30PM with Mia Fesmire, “Painting with POSCA on Clay Pots. Make up a sweet design on a 4” terracotta pot that you can take home afterward! And don’t forget, as with all of our mini classes, you get a $10 coupon to use the same day! On anything you want!

Saturday, March 16th, Michael Bergt will be in-house doing a “Portrait Painting Session in Egg Tempera. This is not a hands-on workshop, but a rare opportunity to sit in on the artist’s process. Since this is a ticketed event, we are limited the number of seats to 16 – so don’t miss your chance to attend an intimate work session with a world-renowned artist. Then, Monday, March 18th, Soft Pastel Painters are in for a treat when we welcome Tobi Clement to teach with us for a special one-day workshop, “Pastel Paint a Spectacular Sunset“. She is known for her skies, and in this all-day workshop she will provide you with a specific palette to aid in your creating a sunset on Anthracite Pastel mat paper. This class will include all materials for use during class.

Friday and Saturday, March 22nd and 23rd, Dan McBride will be hosting a workshop in “Acrylic and Mixed Media Applications: To the brink of disaster and back!

On Monday, March 25th, we welcome her for “The Art of Book Collage Lesson 1: Mining the Hardback – bring an old book with you, and as a class, you will deconstruct your books and share the bounty of those materials with one-another.

And on Friday, March 29th, Kathryn Stedham hosts “Palette Knife and Bold Brushstrokes” which she has opened to include both traditional oil painters and water-mixable oil painters as well. AND…Artisan can and will prepare materials for you to use during class in either medium! That means you just bring yourself!

To close out a very wonderful month on Saturday, March 30th, we are ecstatic to have Matthew Higginbotham in-house to do a FREE DEMO!

For example, a pair of 9’s and 12’s will construct a 9×12 Porter frame. With one additional pair of 16’s, you could make a 12×16 carrier, or a 16×9 carrier, which is a standard Masterpiece size that is the same aspect ratio as a normal television.
