Santa Fe Art Week July 12th – 21st + Art & Music Events

The summer is officially here in Santa Fe and like usual is going to be loaded with lots of great art activities. Santa Fe has gotten behind the art scene in a big way in July with declaring July 12th through 21st Art Week in Santa Fe. If you go to artsantafe.com you can check out more than 100 activities going on around the city to celebrate the Santa Fe art scene. Artisan is going to be holding short art workshops all week in our Santa Fe store and I will be hosting Art Fusion radio program from Art Santa Fe on Thursday, July 18th at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Art Santa Fe is a great show of Contemporary art from galleries located all over the globe that happens at Santa Fe Convention Center from July 18th through July 21st..   Santafe.com is another great source for a calendar of what activities is going on this summer in Santa Fe. Don’t forget the Santa Fe bandstand is in full swing on the downtown plaza featuring great bands playing their hearts out…so what more could you want…Art and Music…Music and Art….Santa Fe Rocks!

Artist Statement

My work is a mosaic of fragments, collected experiences, information, and images. This mosaic is both ideological and visual. I like to begin with an idea that I allow to develop unhindered to encompass anything from the serious to the absurd. No thought is isolated and the simplest can build upon itself. Layers of connected thoughts revealed in a succession of images link and multiply in evolving variations. In my recent work, for example, I sometimes begin with just a word, but already this word comes with many meanings and connotations. Then I make a connection, a thin bridge, between each word and its images, and other perhaps abstract and veiled yet related ideas. My artworks are often labyrinths of intricate wordplay. I want the words to be read as fleeting and visual impressions that interact with the other stitched images. The figures in my work in combination with the words form a running commentary.

In the Armor and Facade series, I want to “armor” modern society. These artworks are about how we protect and present ourselves. I begin with simple ordinary ready-made garments that I deconstruct; armor with quilting, imagery, and text; and then rebuild. Garments have their mundane yet necessary purpose to protect us from the elements. But they are obviously more than that in every society. They are our “decoration”; they express and reflect who we are as individuals and as a culture.

July Workshops

This month we have a free demo on Sunday, July 7th and two-day workshop on Friday July 12th and Saturday July 13th, with Nadine Charlsen, an urban landscape watercolor artist and instructor based in Asheville, North Carolina. Charlsen’s background as a theatrical lighting designer in New York City for 31 years has allowed her to incorporate her knowledge of light, shadow, scale, colors and textures to culminate an artistic drama. This class will introduce you to new methods in your watercolor process and push you to make work outside of your comfort zone! Don’t miss out on learning with a cutting edge watercolor painter.

Then, Monday, July 15th, we welcome world-renowned artist Michael Bergt to Artisan as he offers a private portrait drawing demonstration on toned paper. If you’ve ever wanted to sit backseat for a master painter – this is your chance! Michael glides through his demos with ease – explaining each step in his process clearly and concisely – answering questions as they come up in relation to what you’re seeing happen on the canvas. Last time we had a demo it sold out!

On Friday, July 19th, Kathryn Stedham will be doing a private painting demonstration in oils. Get in the backseat and watch her paint a large-scale landscape painting alla prima! What sets Kathryn apart as an artist is her quick rendition of an under painting and then a remarkable build up of texture and layers to create convincing and vast scenes.

This session will be an introduction to the Stedham Method, a non-toxic studio practice and an invitation to return back to our shop on July 26th as she teaches an all day workshop focused on Expressionist Landscapes and Big Skies. As Kathryn has been working closely with Holbein – all of her workshops now come with an opportunity to paint in either traditional oils or water-based oils depending on your preference – and as always, open to students of all levels!

Then on July 20th we are so excited to have abstract artist Sandra Duran Wilson come back to Artisan with a new version of her Go with the Flow mini class which features Ampersand Panels. Come through and snag some of Sandra’s time and technique teachings for only $10! After the session, your registration cost turns into a $10 store-credit to stock your pockets with new materials or some of your favorites too!

As always we love hearing your feedback about what we are offering and what you want to see us offer – so please feel free to contact Anastasio and send them your recommendations as well!

To register for these and see forthcoming workshops, visit us at www.calendar.artisansantafe.com for more information.
