Ron’s Palette

It’s Worth A Try!

I recently sat next to an artist having a beer at Santa Fe Bar and Grill and we started talking about the Santa Fe Art scene. I asked him where he was showing now, as I knew he used to show at the base of Canyon Road, at a gallery that is now closed. He said that he is not showing his work anymore as it had gotten very depressing and he felt no one would want it anyway.

It really started me thinking about how similar that is to music. You write songs — or paint — where you are in life…how you feel. I know with my music, songwriting has always been a catharsis to me. What a gift this really is to have an outlet for emotions…and not all emotions are always upbeat and happy…but they are real.

I am enjoying the Art Fusion radio program hosting because the original songwriting and paintings by the guests are all so heartfelt and real…a reflection of who they are and where they are in life. I think it’s important to remind ourselves that where we find ourselves in life is just an experience…and experiences change.

I wonder if the reverse process can happen. When I am feeling down, I can play “Five Little Monkeys” on the piano till my spirit is up again. I am wondering if forcing yourself to paint or create something brighter and more upbeat might actually lift your attitude…it certainly might be worth a try!

Namaste,
Ron

Artist of the Month

Jennifer Wynn Reeves is an artist whose vision and body of work deserves to be seen. Jennifer died on June 22, 2014 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 51. By all accounts, the artist lives on, in and through her work. Reeves created a world of colored shapes and patterns on canvas, paper and the walls of her apartment and studio. Jennifer shared her visions with a larger art world through social media, posting photos of her works accompanied by observations, wry commentary and ruminations both poetic and philosophical. We are honored to share Jennifer Wynn Reeves Facebook posts and honored to expand her audience as our February “Artist of the Month”.

About Jennifer

Jennifer Wynne Reeves was known for creating a body of paintings, drawings and photographs that speak to and confront formalist and humanist dilemmas. Beyond her achievements in the art world, Reeves enjoyed a considerable fan-base as a result of her astonishing Facebook presence where she chronicled and interwove her art and diaristic prose.

Artist Statement

Twenty years ago, I called them slugs. In the beginning, they were like long lumps without arms or legs. Powerless. Difficult. Paralyzed. I thought maybe they were the symbols of sloth or depression or fear. They didn’t do anything. I wondered if I should stop making them? They were not beautiful. Nobody liked them. Nobody wanted to look at them. They were repellent and, worse, they were funny. I hated that. I wanted to be a “serious” artist. I was conflicted. I had to make the images that came to me but I was embarrassed. Maybe it wasn’t a fancy path but painting slugs was more honest than painting flowers (nothing against flower paintings, mind you). It came down to a moral choice. So, I determined to follow the slug road. Maybe it was a road that led somewhere? Or maybe not.

Jennifer Reeves, 2007-2008

Cool Item

Of The Month

Artisan carries a lot of unique and/or one of a kind items. Here is one you might find interesting.

Portable Painter:
Hands-Free Watercolor Palette!

Imagine Painting Anywhere, Anytime!

This watercolor palette fits effortlessly in a pocket or purse so it’s always with you. At about the size of a smartphone, it converts instantly to a complete watercolor rig ready for your twelve favorite colors.

The new Portable Painter is all this and more. It’s great on a tabletop, but on uneven surfaces, the built-in water containers excel as a sturdy pedestal base. Perhaps most surprisingly it can even balance on a knee. This allows your hands to be completely free to hold both paper and brush, so it’s ideal for urban sketching, plein air and art journaling.

Whether you’re on a trail in the Sierras, at a sidewalk café in Venice, or even at home, you’ll find the Portable Painter is the ideal compact watercolor palette. Artists will love its quality construction and attention to detail including: unique built-in water containers, brush rests and folding, synthetic double brush. Try it and we’re confident the Portable Painter will become your new travel companion.

Creating One Financial Palette

Hello, I’m Brandon Whitmore, Ron’s son who worked at Artisan for years in Santa Fe at the Cerrillos Road store, mostly off and on during my teenage years. I then graduated UNM in 2015 and became a licensed financial advisor, first with Fidelity Investments and now with Edward Jones in Albuquerque. I really enjoyed my time working with artists at Artisan and now am really enjoying helping my clients reach their financial goals at Edward Jones.

Just like it is helpful to have all your colors on one palette before you…it is helpful to have all your financial investments like IRA’s, stocks, mutual funds and 401(k)s in one place. Consolidations can save you multiple fees, paperwork and helps you keep track of where you stand. Building a strong consolidated investment platform is a lot like creating a painting — you need to have a strategy, know what you are working with, try to avoid mistakes, and be able to see your progress. Think carefully about bringing everything together, you may find there is strength in unity and hopefully build a nest egg to keep you in paint for the rest of your lives.

If you have any questions, need a financial review or just want to chat…give me a call or stop by my office, and let me help you build up your palette.

Respectfully,

Brandon T. Whitmore
