Ron’s Palette

December

As I am writing Ron’s Palette three days before Thanksgiving…I am feeling thankful for my three friends and business partners that I have had for the last thirty-one years. I am often publicly more visible, hosting our videos and Art Fusion radio program but Artisan could not really function without these other three guys. Ernie to my left runs our Albuquerque store. Dennis to my immediate right handles all the budgeting, bills, finance and number stuff involved with our business. Paul to my far right handles our POS system, canvas stretching, receiving merchandise and general Santa Fe store operations. My college degree is in food science and how I ended up doing this retail art supply gig is still a bit of a mystery… but it sure has been a fun ride.

As we go into this holiday season, I wish you peace, love and happiness and may you paint this world a more colorful place than you found it.…blessing from the owners and team members at Artisan!

Namaste,

Ron

Artist of the Month

Sharon Markwardt

Sharon Markwardt is a fourth generation Texan and a life-long artist with an Art degree and a Biology minor. The colorful style for which she is known emerged in the last decade or so, and paralleled her entrance into horsemanship, with its associated injuries and challenges. She laughingly credits her mare with “throwing her into western art!” since her colorful style emerged after a fall. She had the courage to get back in the saddle, and eventually learned the value of calm assertiveness. A new boldness entered her art, and she moved from watercolor to oils.  Her color perception altered, as did her subject matter: stronger, brighter, more Western.  Sharon enjoys pushing her colors and designs while retaining realism and attention to detail.

Animals of the West have become her favorite subjects. It’s no wonder; with horses, dogs, and a donkey on her property, and surrounded by the neighbor’s longhorns, goats, and chickens, interaction with the animals is a part of the daily rhythm. She keeps a camera handy as she travels as well, to catch shots of other subjects.  “I feel a connection to these creatures, and I love it when I can express their personalities and emotion, their soulfulness. So much comes through in the eyes. Painting them gives me great joy, and I think it shows. When collectors tell me my work makes them smile every day … what could be better?”

December 2019

As we approach the end of the year I remind you that we are running limited programming for this month but gearing up for full months once we get into 2020. For anyone who comes into the store, there are paper copies of the January calendar out now, I am sending out a link to the digital copy today as well!

On Friday, December 6th Anita Louise West is hosting Painting Your Own Cards in Watercolor. For anyone who’s out there who wants to make a few special cards for friends and family for the upcoming season we kept you in mind! Everyone will walk away with the know-how to construct smaller paintings and maybe have a handful of precious handmade cards to share as well! All materials are included for you in this workshop but feel free to bring your own special colors or things to use for the workshop.

Then, Saturday, December 7th, we are hosting Working in Fluid Acrylics with Julia Cairns for $120 + tax. For those who have yet to work in this decadent acrylic option, this class will give you all the tools and information you need to know for working in an incredibly vibrant and colorful medium. Julia will demonstrate the techniques she has been employing in her work to kick off the workshop and then you will begin your individual paintings. Open to beginners and those more conversant in painting. Bring your own materials, supply list available online.

Finally, on Saturday, December 14th, Go with the Flow mini class by Sandra Duran Wilson will be our last Ampersand mini class and our last event for the year! For those of you who have yet to get signed up for this popular class, here’s your chance! $10 buys your seat and then morphs into a $10 store credit for use the same day as well! All materials are set-up for you and provided. This is a great thing to do for yourself and a friend to step back from this season’s madness and have a little fun in the process. Tickets will sell out so don’t wait!

See you in the new year, when we step back into the 20s!!
