Ron’s Palette

August in Santa Fe

Santa Fe has long been known to attract artistic types to the city different.  Some believe it is the low humidity and high elevation that allows colors to pop, some believe it is the blending and merging of cultures that allow acceptance of differences and allow for growth, some are attracted here because the over 250 art galleries has made this little town the third largest art market in the US and provides artists a way to support their artistic lifestyle. I know when I first came to Santa Fe 31 years ago, I knew this is the place that I wanted to live, and it became even more than I was dreaming of back then. Santa Fe is also attracting high level musicians that are tired of Nashville dictating their sound or the competitive atmosphere of Austin and other larger music markets. I was down at the bandstand one evening in July listening to Jay Boy Adams and his band playing to a packed audience when he called up Ray Wiley Hubbard and Soul Man Sam up for one song during their performance…all for free. The level of music and art we are exposed to on a regular basis rivals any place in the world. I really believe that exposure like this is beneficial for overall physical and mental wellbeing.  Art and music are light and sound frequencies that are influencing our vibratory existence whether we are conscious of it or not.  This really was one of the founding principles in the Art Fusion radio program we broadcast every week from Artisan. We still have a bit of Summer left so I urge everyone to get out and immerse yourself in the art and music…it might be just what the doctor ordered.

Namaste,

Ron Whitmore

We support some of the best artists in the world!

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS & INSTRUCTORS

Artisan Santa Fe’s workshop program ArtSpot is seeking new instructors and workshop proposals! We strive to keep our dedicated student body interested and engaged with new techniques and materials.

Maybe you teach about a specific technique or use some specific materials to make something new and exciting and you are not afraid to share your techniques with others? You like to assist students in their painting process? You can teach both beginners to advanced together?

We are looking for proposals for ticketed lecture demos, 3 hour (half day) or 6 hour (full day) workshops, or even multi-week studio sessions. We welcome most any subject matter; however, we primarily serve fine artists or those working in experimental practices with traditional materials that we carry in the store.

Our space can generally hold between 12 and 16 students. We provide tables, easels, water containers and offer options to furnish materials for our classes for an additional fee.

Please send your name, website or digital portfolio, class ideas and/or short workshop descriptions to Anastasio at artspot@artisansantafe.com.

August Workshops 2019

This month oil painters have a couple of different opportunities to paint with us.  On Saturday, August 10th, Richard Guzman brings us another one-day workshop, “Trust Your Eyes,” that will teach you how to acknowledge and focus on the information in the periphery of your subject. While it may sound confusing, it is a beloved technique that a lot of people have really enjoyed discovering – and we think it’s important for as many people to learn this as possible. Richard will teach you to really “see” your painting composition by focusing on the whole image rather than one specific component in your composition with his copyrighted technique. This is a good opportunity for beginners and advanced students alike to learn a new trick while working with this traditional medium. Either bring your own materials or have some supplied for you to use during the workshop.

Saturday, August 17th, we welcome Karen Whitmore back to the store to teach another 3 hours session in which you learn to paint an animal – this time she will teach you how to paint a cow! Students love Karen’s teaching style and positive feedback when working with her as well as all of the individual attention. From what we’ve seen, most everyone usually leaves with a completed painting! This class is great for people new to the medium as we will be supplying everything for you to use – including Karen’s specific color palette, as well as a 16″ x 20″ canvas to paint on. You should be prepared to transport a wet masterpiece home at the end of the workshop! This is always a popular class that sells out – so please don’t wait to sign up!

Saturday, August 24th, Sandra Duran Wilson returns with another installment of her Ampersand Panels mini class. This two-hour mini class is meant to immerse you in new materials and techniques – this time you will learn about three different surfaces and how a variety of media works on each on. This class is a steal and comes with a $10-in-store credit that you can use on the same day – practically FREE! If you haven’t gotten to sit in on the class, but want to, don’t miss out! There are only a few open seats left. Everything is provided, just bring yourself!

Friday, August 30th we welcome Anita Louise West to the store so she can show us how she starts an oil painting using oil sticks. This is also to serve as an introduction between Artisan and Anita before she hosts her Four Fridays Painting Sessions beginning September 13th. If any students are curious, about instructor, process or material, please come out and get to know her – then sign up for her workshop – we are excited for this one!

Lastly, Saturday, August 31st, we are hosting Ming Franz who will spend one day teaching you about Chinese Painting: Asian Style Peony. The Chinese technique for painting peony flowers uses a simple one stroke motion for each petal.  This technique takes practice because you need to learn to hold brush in a certain way. It is also efficient because colors are mixed on the brush before each stroke. Ming Franz is a master artist and if you haven’t gotten the chance to work with her yet you are missing out!

As always we love hearing your feedback about what we are offering and what you want to see us offer – so please feel free to contact Anastasio and send them your recommendations as well!

To register for these and see forthcoming workshops, visit us at www.calendar.artisansantafe.com for more information.
