Spring is springing in Santa Fe!

If your allergies haven’t told you yet…spring is springing in Santa Fe. We had such a great winter with lots of snow falling, enabling the ski basin to have one of the best seasons in years…hard to say goodbye to all the great snow boarding, but glad we will have the rivers full and flowing again.

This June 6th, 7th and 8th, Artisan will be participating again in the International Associations of Pastel Societies biennial convention at the Hotel Albuquerque in old town Albuquerque. This event has a vendor floor that has free admission, and features 36 booths of pastel-related manufacturers selling pastel products at fantastic prices. If you are interested in pastel…this is a great way to expose yourself to all the tools available.

The Art Fusion radio program is recorded every Thursday at 11:00 AM at Artisan in Santa Fe. This program blends a visual artist with a musician who plays live original music. We invite you to come experience the taping, and listen to fellow artists share their path, and catch some of the best music around (especially at 11 AM).

I encourage you to use this spring as a way to re-invent, give gratitude, and keep your attitude positive. I read recently that the United States citizens are the most stressed of all the countries in the world. We all are what we think we are, and what we dwell on…be kind to yourself, kind to the people you come in contact with and lets use this spring to start de-stressing and enjoying this time we have on this planet…it really is an attitude. Rock on and upward!

Namaste,
Ron

There is lots going on all the time at Artisan! We offer free demos, paid workshops and more. To see all the events, click HERE!

We have a few wonderful workshops available to you this month!

Saturday, May 4th – Richard Guzman returns to teach another installment his alla prima oil painting workshop. Enjoy a short demonstration with Q & A in the morning, followed by a one-hour break. Then, begin work on your own painting in the afternoon with individual instruction from Richard. Last time, students enjoyed Richard’s “excellent suggestions for color and paint strokes” and “his work-fast alla prima technique. No fear of making mistakes.” And, a “good introduction” to “all info [on] painting safety…” This is a great class for beginners or anyone looking to explore oil paints for the first time.

On Saturday, May 25th, Darlene Olivia McElroy will teach a one day mixed media class focused on YOU! “It’s All About You” brings you face to face with yourself as you explore and examine your best (if not most underlooked) subject matter. For anyone who has yet to make a self-portrait – what are you waiting for?? It is a soothing, cathartic process, and can often be one of the most interesting pieces in your collection! (Can you tell it’s a major interest for me?)

And the following Friday, May 31st, Melinda Tidwell comes back to Artisan with another one-day workshop on Collage. Lesson Two: Mining the Hardback. We ask you to bring your collection of worn paperback books and during the workshop you will deconstruct them for materials, and create some amazing rich and interesting book collages on paper from the harvest. Demonstrations include: deconstructing a paperback book, making shapes, “altering” your book material. One-day workshops are rare with Tidwell, and each lesson can be taken by itself, so please don’t miss this opportunity!

To register for these and see forthcoming workshops, visit us at www.calendar.artisansantafe.com for more information.

Stuff Around The Store

Cool Item

Of The Month

Artisan carries a lot of unique and/or one of a kind items. Here is one you might find interesting.

Stonehenge
Aqua Coldpress Black

The first 100% cotton black watercolor paper

Black paper is not a new thing, but black 100% cotton paper sized for watercolor is. Utilizing their vast experience producing new papers for emerging markets, Legion was able to work directly with artists to create something totally new and desirable. And with recent introductions of new metallic and  pearlescent watercolor paints, pencils, pens, markers and inks, the timing couldn’t be better for  Stonehenge Aqua Coldpress Black to bring these media to life.

Black paper is an exciting, new world. Instead of building up shadows, one builds up light. It’s a place where negative space is transformed into positive. And while it may be dark, it’s a chance for those who live and breathe watercolors to bring a new breed of creativity to light.
